Sample Answer:-

The given column graph gives information about the share of total world production of wheat in Asia, Europe and the rest of the world, from 1840 to 2000. In general, no specific trend can be seen in all the three regions.

In 1840, Asia had the highest share of wheat production (50%), whereas Europe production 40% and the rest of the world only produced 10%. The production of wheat in Asia fell significantly and reached an all time low of 20% by 1920, after which it picked up again and became 40% by 2000. Europe’s share of wheat production increased steadily till 1920 and reached 50%, after which it dropped and escalated moderately till 1960 and reached 38% but after that showed a slight fall and became 33%.

Overall, it can be seen that by 2000, the difference in all the three regions in terms of wheat production was not much pronounced, but Asia was the undisputed leader.

Dear Julia,

It was such joyful news to hear about the new arrival in the Perry family. I hope you must have recovered from all the pain of delivery and are in the pink again. Robert broke this news to me on the phone yesterday.

I hope that by the time you receive this letter, your baby would have got the name, too. It is a shame that I could not participate during this celebration. I wished to join but my boss assigned me a new task that made me travel too many places in the last two weeks. This sudden travelling disturbed all my plans to be with you during this auspicious event. Anyway, the opportunity is missed now. I have decided to come to your place next weekend. Please let me know if you want something from Mumbai for you and the baby. I have some toys and attires for the newborn such as sweater and bodysuit.

My friend, it is essential that you take care of yourself and your anger. I am always a call way for anything.

Yours sincerely,

Samit Paul

Writing Task 2 (AC+GT)

The only effective way to deal with unemployment is to rapid urbanization. How far do you agree?

Sample Answer:-

One of the most serious problems faced by the world today is unemployment. Cities, as major centers of education, art, trade and commerce, provide millions with employment. However, this essay disagrees to the idea of rapid urbanization to address the issue of unemployment, since urbanization is not problem free.

In the first place, cities provide many people with jobs, but urbanization has already created myriads of problems. The severe shortage of proper accommodation facility for the increasing number of migrants and the formation of slums are good examples. Slums, to a very great extent,  leads to the increase in crimes.

In the second place, transport is another problem of big cities even in the industrialized and developed countries. People commute very long distance everyday to go about their business. City busses and trains in developing countries are always much crowded. As an example, the Indian city of Bombay transports by its suburb trains everyday passengers equivalent to the entire population of Australia.

Thirdly, the expansion of cities will result in the destruction of agriculture and forest lands. This will have disastrous consequences for people and the environment alike. Instead, retaining agriculture and forest lands is* a better idea to address the problem of unemployment. For instance, resources from agriculture and forests give plenty of raw materials for industrial development. New industries will create more employment opportunities.

Briefly, the growth of cities has* become a major problem. Large-scale urbanization to solve the problem of unemployment is certainly a very unhealthy one. The preservation and the careful use of natural resources with a focus on sustainable development offer the key solution to unemployment.

What is your full name?

My name is Mika Singh.

Can I see your ID?

Sure, this is my passport.

Where are you from?

I belong to Chandigarh.

What do you do for a living?

I’m an entrepreneur, dealing in sanitary wares.

What do you think shoes tell about someone’s personality?

I believe shoes are important parts of our life. In the beginning, shoes were designed to protect our feet from uncomfortable surface, cold weather, and sharp objects. With time, shoes have passed from being an item of necessity to an item of luxury. It’s believed that shoes display the class, sophistication and choice of wearer. Therefore, it’s given as much of important as of the clothing sense.

Do you like wear formal or casual shoes?

I prefer both of them depending upon the occasion. For example, when at office, I wear formal shoes because I need to meet my clients and others and wear sophistication matters. During holidays and weekends, the casual shoes play their part.

Do you purchase shows online?

Yes, I do buy shoes online because at times, we get a great deal which you might not get at the physical stores. However, I ensure to buy only branded shoes online because I don’t trust shoes that are of obscure (= not well known) or any new company unless l see them, feel them and walk at the store. For example, if I’ve to buy shoes of Bata or Sketchers, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy them online because I know their fitting, can rely on their quality without feeling them.

Do you think people have too many pairs of shoes?

Certainly, ‘Yes’! Some people are too much fond of having a collection of shoes for different occasions. They’re very particular about their pairs of shoes. Some people have a collection of shoes according to the event and their dressing also.

Do you like to spend money on shoes?

I wouldn’t buy them blindly but when I need them surely I would spend whatever money is required to own a good pair of shoes. I’m not one of those who spend extravagantly after shoes. For casual and running shoes which generally don’t use the original leather, I buy them without giving a thought. But when I’ve to buy formal shoes that use the genuine leather, I will buy them only when a pair of shoes that is being used is not usable any longer because of my incessant love to animals. The formal shoes using genuine leather are made of the skin of animals, and I don’t want to be a participant of the animal cruelty anymore.

PART 2 – Cue Card

Talk about a place where you go for a swim.

Please say,

  • Why you like to go there
  • What the place looks like
  • Who you go there with

In fact, swimming is one of my favorite hobbies. There is a popular swimming pool in Shenoy Nagar which is closer to my home. Its name is also ‘Swimming Pool’. I’m a member of this swimming pool, and at least thrice week, I go for a swim there. I like it for many reasons. It’s a well maintained with pretty clean washrooms. The ambience is simply awesome and there’s that invites you to start peddling into the water. This swimming pool has produced many professional swimmers for both domestic and international competitions.

It has three swimming pools. This facility is very important because it segregates the section of swimmers. I love kids but I don’t want them to disturb me in the pool, so they’re separated for the mini pool. It’s a huge property.

We are four friends and join there for swimming. As I’m very much passionate about swimming, I go there without waiting for anyone. In fact, I prefer to be alone there because when we are in the group, we talk more and swim less.

PART 3 – Discussion

Why are some sports more popular than others?

The popularity and origin of any particular sport date back to the history and roots of the people and country. For example, baseball to Americans, football to Europeans, ice hockey to Canadians, cricket to the people from the subcontinent. With time, the preference of particular game evolves in every part of the world. We’ve classic example of our country. Indians love playing and watching cricket but many Indians these days take an active part in football, swimming, tennis, badminton, field hockey, and other games. This is a primary reason for liking and disliking a particular sport activity.

What do you think about sports facilities in your country?

Not so good and not so bad either. We’ve good numbers of playgrounds, recreation clubs and government run sports facilities but looking at the numbers of people, I believe that the government should invest more in sports facilities, especially in the current context where people see sports as means of careers.

Can government policies affect sports facilities? How?

There’s no doubt about it. In fact, it’s the primary driver for having required sports facilities. Look at the sports facilities supported by the government of USA, UK, Europe, China and Russia, our government will be ashamed of what they have done to its population. The great athletes and players are produced in a particular type of environment and motivation from the government and other influences. Our players don’t have enough facilities to shine their talents, and they end up compromising themselves with below par facilities. Any government if it pledges to produces more players, they will have to invest more in this social avenue.

What can the government do to improve sport facilities?

The day any government places the importance on medals won at the international tournaments and competitions, people will witness the required sport facilities for each game in every part of India. The annual budget for allocating these facilities is way beyond inadequate. We need more playgrounds and recreational clubs with the professional coaches – some coaches must be financially supported by the government expenditure.
