Academic Writing Task 1
The graphs below show information about electronic games in South Korea in 2003. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
These three pie charts show respectively the age structure of electronic game players in Korea, their gender distribution as well as the percentage of different types of games sold in the country. All information was based on the year 2003.
It can be seen from the first chart that electronic game players in Korea were mostly young people between 18 and 35 (42%). Children and teenagers under 18 years old were the second largest group (35%), and the remaining 23% were over 35 years old.
The second chart shows that male electronic game players clearly outnumbered their female counterparts (72% and 28% respectively).
The third chart shows that action games were by far the best-selling genre, constituting 42% of the electronic game sales in Korea. Next come sports and racing games, which accounted for 21% and 17% respectively. Role-play and education games had less successful sales, with 7% each. The remaining 6% of the sales went to other types of games.
In conclusion, young men aged 18 and 35 were the most likely players of electronic games in Korea, and action games were the most popular genre among Korean players.
General Writing Task 1:-
You are going to have a business trip and arrange your friend to look after your children. Write a letter to the friend. In your letter, you should:
- tell him/her which kind of food your children like and dislike
- tell him/her which kind of activities your children can attend
- tell him/her the time you will pick up your children
I am writing to ask for your help to take care of my kid – Tony, when I am on a business trip from next Monday to next Friday.
As you know, Tony has a fever for all sweet food, especially ice cream. But he is allowed to have it only once every two weeks because he has already got two bad teeth. Therefore, the whole next week he would have no chance to access sweets. Please show your mercy by being tough since he is very good at begging. Besides, he hates fruits but he is really into fruit juice. I would appreciate it very much if you can make one cup of juice every day for him. By the way, I would buy those he likes and take them to your place later this weekend. Except for the above two things, Tony is a cute company and an easy-to-please boy that will bring you little trouble.
Plus, he enjoys playing basketball very much, and I have noticed the basket in your backyard. That would be his playground where he can hang around after school. He sometimes would bring some other kids and play group basketball game. So make some rules when I am away. One-hour physical practice is adequate for a 7-year-old boy, or he would make trouble in having a sound sleep at night by being too excited.
I will pick him up on Friday next week. I’ll give you a call right after my landing off.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Writing Task 2 (AC+GT):-
Creative artists should always have the freedom to express their ideas (in paintings, books, films and songs) in anyway they wish. The government should not restrict what they do. To what extent do you agree with this opinion?
It is important that artists have the freedom to express new ideas without too many restrictions from governments so they can challenge the views of society. If too many restrictions are in place, writers and other artists will not be able to express their views publicly and will no longer question societies values limiting the development of society. However, some restrictions may be necessary to protect people and to avoid unreasonable offence. In this essay the importance of artists being able to express their views freely will be discussed.
Individuals have the right to express themselves, and artists are no exception to this. If artist’s rights are restricted, they may no longer be able to publicly express their views. This means that the public would receive few new ideas and that society’s current thinking is less often challenged. As a result, people may not become aware of some of the problems in society and therefore important problems may not be addressed. Ultimately, this leads to a society that does not develop as well as it could. For example, the restrictions placed on artists and society in China in the early part of the Ming dynasty led to a more insular society and the decline of Chinese civilisation. Restricting artists also means that artists stop producing material such as interesting fashion, pop music and abstract art and that the overall quality of art is reduced. A further problem of reducing freedom for artists is that art becomes less interesting and less relevant to people and a potential flourishing industry that benefits society could be damaged.
However, sometimes it is necessary to place restrictions on what artists can exhibit in order to protect society. For example, society needs to protect children from harmful images and in some cases ideas could be so unacceptable that it may be appropriate to restrict them. In this case it may be necessary for government to take action to limit some of these works of art. For example, in the UK a portrait of child murderer Myra Hindley that was made from handprints of young children was considered by many to have breached decency standards in that country.
In summary, it is important that artists have the right to express themselves through their art and governments should not restrict this right unless there are strong public interest reasons to do so.

Yes, Sir. With pleasure, this is my passport.
Where are you from?
I’m from India, presently living in Bombay.
Do you work or study?
I ma doing masters in Professional Accounting at FDRR. University.
Let’s talk about music, what sort of music do you usually enjoy listening?
Music is a medication to soul. My day starts with music and ends with it. It soothes, calms, comforts and uplifts the soul. It’s a universal healer. I listen to soft rock, Sufi music, old songs and old country classics.
Has the kind of music you like changed over the years?
Yes, the kind of music I used to has changed but all sorts of music genres (=category, class) are available nowadays on the internet. These days music is too loud, very techno types. I personally feel music should calm you, give you joy and bring peace to your soul.
Do you prefer listening to live music or recorded music?
I prefer the recorded music as there’s no disturbance and you can enjoy it at your convenience. In this studio, every bit of music detailing is taken care which results into a worthwhile listening experience. In live music, more than music, you enjoy beholding (=seeing) the singer because of some reason, either you like him or follow him for all good reasons in life.
Do you think listening to music helps you study?
We’ve grown listening to lullabies (= cradle song) and nursery rhymes. When a child cries, a piece of good music is a natural pacifier and he may immediately stop crying so music is a healer. Music can enliven and enrich the lives of children and the people who care for them. Music does help to concentrate studies. Whenever I get bored from the extensive reading, I listen to music just to unwind myself before I get back to my studies.
PART – 2 Cue Card
Describe a time when you tried a new food for the first time.
You should say:
- what food it was
- where you ate it
- what it tasted like
- and explain whether or not you liked this food
Well, I’m a great fan of barbecues and I would like to talk about the first time I tried some typical barbecue food. This happened when I was 10 years old.
My family went out to have dinner to celebrate my younger sister’s birthday. After putting so much thought into some new savoury food to have for our meal, we decided to go to a BBQ restaurant on X street.
We ordered four dishes with three different tastes. One of them which really interested me was grilled-Australian beef, flavoured with something spicy, rich and aromatic. It not only tasted delicious, but also looked appealing. Also, it went well with two kinds of dipping sauces and was served with baguettes. There was also a salad, which gave it a mild taste to contrast with the spicy flavours. The idea of a barbecue originated in America, and for us it was a novel and sophisticated meal.
What I really enjoyed was that we could watch as it was cooked in front of us. I loved how juicy it was and the aroma it had. Just mentioning it makes my mouth water. I mean, the BBQ was out of this world. That was the first time I had tried it, and I would have liked to have kept on coming back for more, but I was just too full.
PART – 3 Discussion
Describe what you think is a healthy diet.
Developing healthy eating habit isn’t as confusing or as restrictive as many people imagine. Personally, a healthy diet is the one which combines enough nutrients for one’s life. Therefore, consuming a rich variety of food is very important because eating a wide assortment of foods helps ensure that you get all of the nutrients, especially the disease-fighting potential that foods offer.
Are there many vegetarians in your country?
Yes, they are. The number of people following vegetarianism has been increasing recently. It is thought that old people or those following a religious, like Buddhism, will be vegetarians; however, youngsters also join to vegetarian community because of many reasons.
Why do you think some people choose to be vegetarians?
People become vegetarians for many reasons, including health, religious convictions, concerns about animal welfare or the use of antibiotics and hormones in livestock, or a desire to eat in a way that avoids excessive use of environmental resources. Some people follow a largely vegetarian diet because they can’t afford to eat meat. Vegetarianism has become more appealing and accessible, thanks to the year-round availability of fresh produce, more vegetarian dining options, and the growing culinary influence of cultures with largely plant-based diets.
How do you think the way we eat will change in the future?
Yes, I do. I think people nowadays pay more attention to healthy food because the awareness of health has been raised among young and old people. Therefore, it will be a remarkable innovation in food consumption in the future.
