WRITING TASK 2 (AC + GT)

Illiteracy has traditionally been viewed as largely a third world problem. However, it is becoming apparent that is countries such as the USA and Australia, illiteracy is on the increase. Discuss the possible causes of this and its effect on society.

Illiteracy, an all-time impediment for progress, has hitherto been considered as an acute problem prevalent in the developing world only. However, in recent times, it has become a serious problem in the developed nations such as Australia and the United states as well. This essay attempts to analyze its causes and effects on society.

At the outset, the immigration of refuges is one of the causes for the increase in illiteracy in Australia and the United States. Natural as well as man-made calamities produce a large number of refugees and some of them get asylum in the developed countries such as Britain, Australia and the US. Some of them have no education enabling them to lead productive and useful lives. Probably, governmental, measures to provide them with education and other amenities of the life fail to reach everyone in need of such help.

Another problem associated with illiteracy in Australia and the US is the increase in the number of people who are unable to participate in the mainstream life. For example, the former American president, George Bush Jr., had mentioned in several occasions about the need to find more English teachers to teach illiterate people in the US. The apparent lack of interest on the part of illiterate parents to send their children to school adds to the despondent (=disappointing) situation.

Briefly, the prime reasons for illiteracy in some developed nations are refugee influx and the apathy of parents towards education. These may result in increasing unemployment and crime rates and other socio-economic problems.
